Trichy, India (today): Despite the country’s present coal shortage, electricity minister V Senthil Balaji said at Trichy airport on Sunday that the state government will continue to provide uninterrupted electricity to domestic and industrial customers. The minister said that production from private thermal power plants has decreased due to a coal shortage, and that his department is considering alternative strategies to boost demand. We are supplying 60,000 tonnes a day from coal-fired plants in the state. We have enough electricity supply to cover four-five days.

According to him, the state government had signed an MoU with private thermal power plants to produce 2,830 MW of power but was only getting 1,300 MW due to a coal shortage and import difficulties. For the time being, we have taken steps to ensure a seamless supply of electricity. The minister explained that because of the low electricity generation from private thermal plants, our own power generation is being enhanced with the available coal stock, and that the minister expected the changes in production would be reversed. He said the number of thermal power plants in the United States increased to 70% from 43 percent in the last month. The Union government must take steps. We are requesting the coal we are entitled to and they must provide it, according to the minister.Tamil Nadu uses 16,000 MW of electricity a day, according to him. There was a 2,500 MW difference between production and demand.
