Two persons, who suffered grievous injuries in separate attacks, died at the government hospital here on Monday.

In the first case, Manikandan, 22, a resident of Mela Minappan Street in Woraiyur, who serviced gym equipment, sustained injuries in a brawl with another local, Senthil Kumar on Sunday evening.

Police sources said Manikandan, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, went to Senthil Kumar’s house, where a quarrel broke out between them. Manikandan allegedly pushed Senthil Kumar down, causing injury to the head.

Senthil Kumar’s relative, Pugalendhi, who resided nearby, rushed in and the two allegedly attacked Manikandan with sharp weapons. Manikandan, who was admitted to the government hospital, succumbed to injuries in the early hours on Monday.

Senthil Kumar is undergoing treatment at the hospital, while Pugalendhi is said to be absconding. Woraiyur police registered a case of murder.

In the second incident in Navalpattu police station limits on the outskirts of the city, the victim was identified as N. Veeramuthu, 37, of Poolangudi.

Police sources said a quarrel broke out between Veeramuthu and R. Mariappan, 24, after the latter reportedly shooed a mongrel that chased him while he was riding a motorcycle on Sunday night. The mongrel belonged to Veeramuthu.

The quarrel took a turn for the worse and Veeramuthu allegedly assaulted Mariappan, who left the spot and later returned with associates. The group allegedly attacked Veeramuthu, causing him grievous injury. He died of injuries at the government hospital.

Mariappan and four others were arrested for murder by Navalpattu police.
