TRICHY: The Narcotics Bureau of Intelligence-Crime Investigation Department (NIB-CID) and the Central Intelligence Unit (CIU) seized 14 kg of ganja from two women in Trichy on Friday.

NIB-CID inspector T Ramesh said on Saturday he and two constables from CIU arrested G Dhavamani, 63, of Mill Colony in Ramji Nagar in Trichy and her daughter A Nandhini, 48.

Acting on information, the police conducted a raid near the regional transport office (RTO) in Pirattiyur. They found two women loitering in a suspicious manner. They conducted inquiries with the women and found seven consignments ganja in their possession. The total weight of the ganja was 14 kg valued at Rs 2.8 lakh.

The women confessed to the police that they smuggled the ganja from Anakkapalli in Andhra Pradesh to Ramji Nagar at the behest of ganja peddler R Susila of Ramji Nagar.

The two women travelled on train to Anakkapalli on September 25. They met A Raja of Ramji Nagar who was staying in Anakkapalli to source ganja from the local suppliers there. Raja gave them the consignment. The women returned to Trichy on September 28 by bus.

They were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
