Trichy: Trichy corporation has decided to fence the banks of the Uyyakondan canal to prevent locals from dumping waste.

The decision comes following complaints from the public over extensive pollution due to dumping of waste into the Uyyakondan.

In a part of Palakkarai falling under ward 50, people using the service road (Old Palakkarai bridge across Uyyakondan) situated between Paruppukara street and NM Street have been dumping waste into the canal, said officials.

Since the portion of the canal was not fenced, a design has been prepared to raise the fence tall enough to prevent people from throwing waste into the canal, they added.

People had been throwing the waste wrapped in plastic covers, officials claimed.

“A preliminary design has been prepared. Soon after obtaining the funds, the stretch of the canal will be fenced. More areas abutting the canal will be fenced in a similar manner,” an official said.

Around 8km of the canal which flows through the city faces similar threats.

The civic body has so far covered the banks passing through Raja Colony Anna Nagar, Kulimikkarai and Alwarthope localities.
