Congress leader Shashi Tharoor delivered a sharp rejoinder to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s recent criticism, accusing him of adopting the “Modi Government’s uncaring attitude” since joining the BJP. Tharoor responded to Scindia’s label of “armchair critic” by pointing out “evident shortcomings” in the government’s planning and its failure to proactively address predictable issues.

Taking a dig at Scindia’s switch to the BJP, Tharoor expressed disappointment that he had embraced the government’s indifferent stance toward the public. He emphasized that people’s suffering during the festive season did not seem to affect the government. Tharoor acknowledged some growth but criticized the government’s planning and response to problems like flight disruptions caused by dense fog.

Responding to Scindia’s focus on his armchair, Tharoor urged the minister to prioritize addressing the passengers’ agony over engaging in name-calling. He emphasized fixing incompetencies, lack of preparation, and loopholes in the Ministry’s functioning.

Recent incidents, including flight cancellations, delays, communication lapses, and passenger-related issues, have drawn public attention, prompting Tharoor to question the government’s readiness for predictable challenges like winter fog at Delhi airport. Scindia cited pollution control exercises as a delaying factor and assured corrective actions for any airline laxity. The aviation sector’s service quality has been under scrutiny, with passengers expressing dissatisfaction despite high ticket prices.
