United States Vice President Kamala Harris issued a compelling plea on Sunday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza while pressing Israel to escalate the delivery of aid to alleviate what she termed as “inhumane” conditions and a “humanitarian catastrophe” among the Palestinian populace.

Addressing attendees at an event in Selma, Alabama, commemorating the anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” when state troopers violently clashed with peaceful protesters, Harris delivered some of the most forceful remarks by a senior US official, urging Israel to address the dire situation in Gaza.

Harris called upon Hamas to accept a deal aimed at releasing hostages, which would initiate a six-week ceasefire and facilitate increased aid distribution. She underscored the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the suffering endured by the people of Gaza and stressing the moral imperative to act swiftly.

“People in Gaza are starving. The conditions are inhumane, and our common humanity compels us to act,” stated Vice President Harris. “The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses.”

Israel’s absence from Gaza ceasefire negotiations in Cairo on Sunday came after Hamas refused to comply with Israeli demands for a comprehensive list identifying hostages still alive, according to reports from an Israeli newspaper.

“Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well, there is a deal on the table. And as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that deal,” remarked Harris. “Let’s get a ceasefire. Let’s reunite the hostages with their families. And let’s provide immediate relief to the people of Gaza.”

The situation in Gaza remains tense, with international pressure mounting for an end to hostilities and increased humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian population.
